Deep Springs Iris in Michigan '05
Gorgeous, aren't they? Those are Owens Valley wild iris. In their native home they are much paler and less than 18 inches tall. The day I moved out of DS, I put in the truck two wizened little rhizomes that had survived the landscaping around MidFac. After multiplying them for a few years in Texas, they were planted around a rotting stump in Michigan, where they overwintered just fine. In Michigan, they were more than 30 inches high and had 3 or 4 blooms on each stalk, in the clear lavender you see above.
Photos taken with my old camera. For a great professional picture of them in the wild, see here.
